Jackalopes

Species
Domestic Baby Jackalope
Habitat:
Wild jackalopes can be found stalking the grasslands of middle North America. Generally a nomadic species, they migrate from the forests in the winter down to the open plains in the summer. Their domestic cousins are captive bred and can be found all over the United States and Canada if one knows the right breeders.
Diet:
All jackalopes are carnivores, domesticated breeds being no exception. To maintain optimum health, it is recommended captive jackalopes are fed a diet heavy in protein consisting of manly gut-loaded mealworms and crickets. Fresh water should also be offered daily, and during electrical storms, you may want to allow your jackalope outdoor access as they take in large quantities of static electricity.
Characteristics:
Domestic Jackalopes differ from their wild cousins significantly. While wild Jackalopes are known to be wily and fierce creatures, often stealing whiskey from cowboys and goring people with their horns, these aggressive behaviors have been bred out of the domestic jackalope. This selective breeding results in a cuddly, docile companion that makes an excellent house pet. When attempting to identify a domestic jackalope, take note of their rounded face and horns, as well as the wide variety of colors the aspiring owner can choose from.
Species
Pudgy Domestic Jackalope
Habitat:
The Pudgy Jackalope does not exist in the wild. Like dwarf rabbits, the Pudgy Jackalope is the result of breeding a recessive gene mutation to create the signature rounded, flat-faced look. The only place where you will find Pudgy Jackalopes (and the only environment suited to them) is as indoor house pets or familiars.
Diet:
Like all jackalope breeds, Pudgies thrive on a diet of insects. Watching them attempt to catch butterflies and grasshoppers is extremely entertaining.
Characteristics:
This Jackalope breed is defined by its short, stubby limbs, rounded body, and oversized head. Because of their physical mutations, Pudgy Jackalopes need to be highly supervised, especially when out of doors. They tend to be very trusting and innocent which can lead to all manner of precarious situations when left to fend for themselves.
Species
California Jackalope
Habitat:
Found in wooded areas in Southern California and wandering in the Mojave desert. Nocturnal, mostly observed in the early morning hours or just after dusk.
Diet:
Omnivorous. California Jackalopes are scavengers, eating a variety of insects, nuts, berries, vegetable matter, and even the occasional bit of carrion.
Characteristics:
Despite their name, California Jackalopes are not true jackalopes at all. These mouse-like faeries seem to share more in common with the kangaroo rat where looks and behavior are concerned. This species is very rare and hard to come across, they do not breed in captivity, and their fierce tempers make them difficult to handle. It is rare for a California Jackalope to be available for adoption through the Menagerie.
